Some readers may shudder; these are not house cockroaches, they are fighting crickets.

بعض القراء قد تقشعر أجسادهم ولكن هذه ليست صراصير منزلية بل صراصير الليل أو كريكيت تتصارع.

No doubt you have heard crickets chirping loudly in summer nights, those are the creatures we are talking about. By the way only males chirp by rubbing their forewings together. They produce three distinct song types: A rhythmic “calling song” to attract some females; a faster deeper “courtship song” when about to mate; and a loud trill “aggressive song” often produced as two male crickets fight.

Cricket fighting is a form of amusement popular in many areas in China. It was nurtured by Tang Dynasty emperors more than 1,000 years ago and later popularized by the commoners. During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) China's Communist government banned cricket fighting as a bourgeois predilection. Now it is undergoing a revival, even as a tourist attraction.

لا شك أنكم قد سمعتم نقيق صراصير الليل العالي في ليالي الصيف، تلك هي المخلوقات التي نتحدث عنها. وبالمناسبة الذكور فقط هي التي تغرد وذلك بفرك أجنحتها الأمامية ببعضها. وهي تنتج ثلاثة أنواع من التغريدات المتميزة: "تغريدة الاستدعاء" الإيقاعية لجذب الإناث؛ "وتغريدة الجماع" السريعة والعميقة عندما يكون على وشك الجماع؛ "والتغريدة العدوانية" ذات التريل وغالبا ما تصدر عند قتال اثنين من الصراصير الذكور.

صراع صراصير الليل أو الكريكيت هو شكل من أشكال التسلية الشعبية في العديد من المناطق الصينية. وقد لقيت رعاية من قبل أباطرة سلالة تانغ منذ أكثر من 1000 سنة، وبعد ذلك أصبحت شعبية للعامة. وخلال الثورة الثقافية (1966-1976) حظرت الحكومة الشيوعية الصينية صراع الكريكيت باعتباره تسلية برجوازية. لكنها الآن تمر تمر في مرحلة انتعاش، حتى كجذب سياحي.

The "Yu Sheng Cup" cricket-fighting tournament in Luhua on Chongming Island is held during China's week-long national holiday and organized by the Chongming Tourist Department and local government. A total of 16 groups participated. While betting on the games is illegal, the winning team is awarded a certificate and $1,500.

A cricket sells for $2 to $50 each, but exceptionally aggressive crickets can fetch much more. Crickets from Shandong province, particularly those from Ningjin County, are most prized for their big heads, necks and legs, as they are born with indomitable will to fight and strong power of endurance, ferocity, toughness and unyieldingness. Ningjin County had provided crickets as tribute to emperors during the past dynasties in ancient China. In 2010, the cricket market volume was estimated to be $63 million.

تقام بطولة كأس "يو شنغ" لصراع صراصير الليل فى لوهوا فى جزيرة تشونغ مينغ خلال العطلة الوطنية وتستمر مدة اسبوع وتقوم بتنظيمها ادارة السياحة فى تشونغ مينغ والحكومة المحلية. وتشارك فيها 16 مجموعة. المراهنات والقمار على هذه المباريات غير قانونية، إلا أن الفريق الفائز يحصل على شهادة وعلى جائزة تقارب 1500 دولار.

يباع الصرصور ما بين دولارين إلى خمسين دولارا للواحد، ولكن الصراصير استثنائية العدوانية يمكنها أن تحصّل أكثر من ذلك بكثير. صراصير مقاطعة شاندونغ، وبالذات من منطقة نينغجين، هي الأكثر قيمة وذلك لكبر رؤوسها ورقبابها وسيقانها، فهي تولد بإرادة لا تقهر للقتال وقوة كبيرة للتحمل وتملك الشراسة والخشونة وعدم الإستسلام. وقد قدمت منطقة نينغجين الصراصير هدايا للأباطرة خلال السلالات الماضية في الصين القديمة. وقد قدر في عام 2010 حجم سوق الصراصير بـ 63 مليون دولار.
