I didn't expect that! Jewish neighborhood in hundreds of cities around the world, from Melbourne in Australia to Toronto in Canada, are enclosed by nearly invisible wires, known as eruv. Barely visible wires are strung high above the heads of pedestrians and roofs of houses, on utility poles and lamp posts. Why?

لم أكن أتوقع ذلك! فالأحياء اليهودية في مئات المدن الكبيرة في أرجاء العالم، من ملبورن في أستراليا إلى تورنتو في كندا، محاطة بأسلاك لايمكن ملاحظتها تقريباً، تسمى إيروف. أسلاك بالكاد ترى مشدودة فوق رؤوس المارة وأسطح المنازل وعلى أعمدة الكهرباء وأعمدة الإنارة. لماذا؟

During Sabbath day (Saturday) orthodox Jews are prohibited from performing 39 categories of activities, including carrying anything from house to street, even house keys or pushing a baby stroller. Eruvs are ritualistic enclosure that extend the boundaries of their homes to allow performing essential enough function of life outside the house.

خلال أيام السبت يحظر على اليهود وفق معتقداتهم القيام بتسعة وثلاثين نوع من الأعمال بما في ذلك حمل الأشياء خارجين من بيوتهم إلى الشارع حتى ولو كان مفتاح البيت أو دفع عربات أطفالهم. والإيروف هي أسوار شعائرية لتوسعة حدود بيوتهم حتى يستطيعون القيام فقط بالأعمال الضرورية جداً للحياة خارج بيوتهم

In ancient times, eruvs were closed courtyards containing several Jewish homes and often a synagogue. Sometimes physical boundaries such as walls, hedges, and roads were considered as enclosures. As communities grew larger, it became impossible to contain them within walls. So they started erecting poles and strung wires as fictitious enclosures.

في القديم، كانت الإيروف هي الساحات المغلقة التي تحتوي على عدة منازل يهودية وغالبا ما يكون بينها كنيس يهودي. وفي بعض الأحيان اعتبرت الحدود المادية مثل الجدران والأسيجة والطرقات كأسوار إيروف. وعندما كبرت المجتمعات أصبح من المستحيل احتوائها داخل جدران. لذا بدأوا بنصب أعمدة وشد أسلاك معلقة عليها كأسوار وهمية.
