I saw the above picture with the caption in a blog. It raised my curiosity, so I set sails to search for facts.

I found, according to New York News, and others, that there is a ritual called Ma'nene, observed every three years in the Toraja district of Indonesia's South Sulawesi Province. During this ritual family members carefully dress their mummified relatives to cherish the memory of their deceased ancestors. Locals believe dead family members are still with them, even if they died hundreds of years ago.

فوجدت وفقاً لصحيفة نيويورك نيوز وغيرها من الصحف أن هناك طقوساً تسمى "ماء نيني"، تحدث كل ثلاث سنوات في منطقة توراجا من مقاطعة سولاويزي الاندونيسية الجنوبية. حيث يقوم أفراد الأسرة خلال هذه الطقوس بإلباس أقاربهم المحنطين للإعتزاز بجذورهم وإحياء ذكراهم. إذ أن السكان المحليين يعتقدون أن أفراد أسرتهم الموتى لا يزالون يعيشون معهم، حتى ولو أنهم ماتوا منذ مئات السنين.

In the past, when the villages of Tana Toraja were extremely isolated and difficult to reach, it is said that certain people had powers to make the dead walk to their villages to be present at own funerals. According to old believes of Mamasa people, the dead must return to place of origin to meet relatives, so that they guide him into after-life journey after completing the funeral ceremonies. If someone died while on a journey, and unless he has a strong magic power, it's necessary to procure an expert services, to guide the dead back to his village. The dead should walk back no matter how far away his village was. Those accompanying the deceased warn people they met on their path not to talk directly to the dead man.

These days, the practice of walking the dead back to their place of origin became a sort of rituals for family gathering and cherishing the memories of their ancestors. The corpse is made to get up and walk for as long as ten minutes. At the ceremony, a water buffalo is sacrificed.

في الماضي، عندما كانت قرى تانا توراجا معزولة تماماً وصعبة الوصول إليها، يقال أن لبعض الأشخاص القدرة على جعل الميت يمشي حتى يصل إلى قريته لكي يحضر جنازته الخاصة. فوفقا لمعتقدات شعب الماماسا، يجب على الميت العودة إلى قريته الأصلية للقاء أقاربه لكي يوجهونه إلى رحلة ما بعد الحياة بعد أن ينتهوا من مراسيم الجنازة. فإذا توفي شخص أثناء رحلةٍ فيجب استئجار خبير لتوجيه الميت للعودة إلى قريته، إلا إذا كان لدى الميت قوى سحرية خارقة. فعلى الميت أن يمشي عائداً مهما كانت قريته بعيدة. و في طريق العودة يحذر مرافقو الجثة من يجتمع من الناس بأن لا يتحدثوا مع الميت مباشرة.

وفي هذه الأيام، أصبحت ممارسات مشي الأموات إلى مواطنهم الأصلية نوعا من الطقوس هدفها جمع العائلة واستعادة ذكريات أجدادهم حيث يقومون بجعل الجثث تمشي مدة لا تقل عن عشر دقائق. ويقومون بالتضحية بجاموس الماء في الإحتفال.

Toraja cave tombs with windows and balconies. It is said that Toraja burial caves has intact human corpses since 1905. But how do they mummify their ancestors remains to be discovered.

كهوف مدافن توراجا لها شبابيك وبلكونات. ويقال أن كهوف الدفن في توراجا فيها جثث بشرية سليمة منذ عام 1905. ولكن كيف يحنطون أسلافهم أمرٌ لا يزال غامضاً.
