Flowing from the edge of the Taylor Glacier, this dramatic, rust-red waterfall pours from the white ice into the frozen surface of Lake Bonney below. At first glance, it looks like a scene from a horror movie, but the truth behind its vibrant color is a fascinating story of science, isolation, and survival.

No it is not. It is a jellyfish washed off the shore, commonly known as the fried egg jellyfish or egg-yolk jellyfish (scientifically Phacellophora camtschatica). This species can be easily identified by the yellow coloration in the center of its body which closely resembles an egg yolk, hence it got its common name. It can be found worldwide.

MBARI (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) researchers have used an undersea robot, a remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), to taken a video of the barreleye fish in the deep waters just offshore of Central California. At depths of 600 to 800 meters, the ROV cameras showed these fish hanging motionless in the water, their eyes glowing a vivid green in the ROV's bright lights. The ROV video also revealed a previously un-described feature of these fish--its eyes are surrounded by a transparent, fluid-filled shield that covers the top of the fish's head, making the head as if made of glass.

The Giant Barrel Sponge plays a crucial ecological role by improving water clarity, supporting reef regeneration, and providing habitat for other marine life.

These are black and white seabirds called razor-billed auks, or razorbills, having a compressed black bill encircled by a white band. They are  of the American and European coasts of the northern North Atlantic. They spend most of their time hunting at sea. After breeding, the Razorbill will winter at sea, sometimes as far as the Western Mediterranean.
