When Chevrolet started producing the 'Vega' automobile during the 1970s, one of their objectives was to keep the car cost around $2,000. At the time, the freight charges across the United States were around $300 per car – a substantial surcharge in comparison with the car price.

GM engineers came up with a clever solution. Instead of loading the cars horizontally on train-car racks, the Vegas were stacked vertically on a specially designed auto-rack – the Vert-A-Pac. This would allow 30 automobiles in a single train car instead of 18, reducing the freight cost to almost half.
