عصفور صغير يتميز بمنقار كالشوكة ولحية مذهلة لها ألوان قوس قزح.

The rainbow-bearded thornbill is a species of hummingbird. Its habitat is in subtropical or tropical high-altitude grassland areas, in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. The bird averages 10.5 - 11 cm in length and weigh 5.5 - 6.4 g.

عصفور المنقار الشوكة ذو لحية قوس قزح هو نوع من الطيور الطنانة. و موطنه في مناطق المراعي شبه الاستوائية أو المدارية على ارتفاعات عالية. يبلغ طول العصفور 11 - 10.5 سم ووزنه 6.4 - 5.5 غرام.

They neither live nor migrate in flocks; and there is no pair bond for this species. Males court females by flying in a u-shaped pattern in front of them. He will abandon the female immediately after copulation. One male may mate with several females.

وهي طيور لا تعيش سوية ولا تهاجر في أسراب؛ وليس بينها رابطة زوجية. ذكورها تغازل الإناث بتحليقها أمام الإناث في نمط على شكل حرف. والذكر يهجر الأنثى مباشرة بعد الجماع. وقد يتزاوج الذكر واحد مع عدة إناث.

The female is responsible for building the cup-shaped nest out of plant fibers woven together and green moss on the outside for camouflage in a protected location in a shrub or tree on a low, thin horizontal branch. She lines the nest with soft plant fibers, animal hair and feather down, and strengthens the structure with spider webbing and other sticky material, giving it an elastic quality to allow it to stretch to double its size as the chicks grow and need more room.

والأنثى هي المسؤولة عن بناء العش وتبنيه على شكل كوب من الألياف النباتية المنسوجة معا تغلفها الطحالب الخضراء في الخارج للتمويه في مكان محمي في شجيرة أو شجرة على فرع أفقي رفيع منخفض. وتقوم بتبطين العش بألياف نباتية ناعمة وشعر حيواني وريش وتقوي البنية بشبكة خيوط عنكبوت ومواد أخرى لزجة، مما يعطيها جودة مرنة تسمح لها بالتمدد إلى ضعف حجمها عند نمو كتاكيتها التي ستحتاج إلى مساحة أكبر.

The young is born blind and immobile, but will be able to leave the nest when they are about 10 days old. The female pushes the food down the chicks' throats with her long bill directly into their stomachs.

يولد الكتكوت أعمى وغير قادر على التحرك ولكنه يكون قادرا على ترك العش عندما يصبح عمره حوالي عشرة أيام. وتقوم الأم بدفع الطعام بمنقارها الطويل في حناجر كتاكيتها مباشرة إلى المعدة.
