What? an astronaut and an ice cream eating grotesque on a 16^th century catherdral?

هل يعقل؟ رجل فضاء وحيوان خرافي يأكل الآيس كريم على كنيسة من القرن السادس عشر؟

Photographs of this astronaut figure and a grotesque eating ice cream has been circulating on the Internet for years, generating a considerable amount of debate and speculations. Some spoke about alien space visitors and other were skeptical believing that these photographs are fake and the astronaut was added using image manipulation software. But what is the truth?

صور هذا النحت لرائد فضاء ولحيوان اسطوري يتناول الآيس كريم تم تداولها منذ عدة سنوات على شبكة الإنترنت، وقد أدت إلى نقاشات كثيرة وتكهنات. فقد تحدث البعض عن زيارة لسكان الفضاء والبعض شككوا بأن هذه الصور هي غير حقيقية وأن أحدهم أضاف رائد الفضاء باستخدام برامج معالجة الصور بالحسوب. ولكن ما هي الحقيقة؟

The ancient Spanish city of Salamanca, situated on the banks of the River Tormes, is one of the oldest university towns in Europe with a rich and elegant collection of Renaissance, Roman, Gothic and Baroque monuments. Among them is a 16th century cathedral. Over cathedral's northern entrance, perched high among the ornate carvings, is the unmistakable figure of a modern astronaut floating in space. He sits on a stalk complete with boots, helmet, and breathing apparatus on his back with tubes attached to the front of his suit, not far away from a grotesque eating ice cream!!

المدينة الإسبانية القديمة سالامانكا تقع على ضفاف نهر تورميس وهي واحدة من أقدم المدن الجامعية في أوروبا وفيها مجموعة غنية وجميلة من مباني عصر النهضة والرومانية والقوطية والباروكية. ومن بينها كاتدرائية من القرن السادس عشر. فوق المدخل الشمالي للكاتدرائية يبرز عالياً بين المنحوتات المزخرفة، وبشكل لا لبس فيه، رائد فضاء حديث يسبح في الفضاء يجلس على ساق نبات بحذائه وخوذته وأجهزة التنفس على ظهره مربوط بأنابيب تصل إلى الجزء الأمامي من بدلته، وليس بعيدا عنه نحت لحيوان اسطوري يتناول الآيس كريم!! نعم الآيس كريم الذي لم يكن معروفاً في القرن السادس عشر!!

The cathedral   الكاثيدرائية

The figures of the astronaut and the ice cream eating grotesque do exist for real, but they weren't carved in the 16th century but added during a restoration in 1992, by stonemason Miguel Romero. Apparently, this isn't the only contemporary symbol added to the cathedral's façade, a lynx, a bull and a crayfish among others had been added.

تمثال رائد الفضاء والحيوان آكل والآيس كريم موجودين فعلاً، لكنهما لم ينحتا في القرن السادس عشر بل أضيفا خلال ترميم قام به البناء ميغيل روميرو في عام 1992. ويبدو أنه ليس النحت الوحيد المعاصر الذي أضيف إلى واجهة الكاثيدؤائية فقد أضيف حيوان الوشق والثور والربيان (جراد البحر) وغيره.
