Once upon a time, a Peruvian introvert named Oscar Angulo met an American hippie girl named Susanne on the hills of Machu Picchu. The two fell in love and traveled the world, having their first few children as they bounced across America before eventually settling in the Lower East Side of Manhattan NY in 1996. As their brood continued to grow, the parents — spooked by the violence in the neighborhoods — decided to adopt the Hare Krishna doctrine that they were exposed to in West Virginia and disassociate their family from the rest of world, confined at home and home-schooled by their mother. The kids are 6 boys and one girl. All spent their entire childhoods indoor. They would only get out a maximum of nine times per year escorted by their parents. The story goes that, Crystal Moselle's, a film director, was walking down the street one New York morning in 2010 when she passed by six identical boys with remarkably long hair and dressed in suits inspired by Reservoir Dogs movie. Her curiosity too piqued to ignore, Moselle pulled a swift 180 and doubled back to introduce herself. At first, the conversation was strained, but when Moselle revealed to the Angulo brothers that she's a filmmaker, it was as if she had uttered the magic word that opened a hidden world to which no others entered before. Moselle became their first friend and even managed to get cameras into their home. Moselle produced a documentary film about the Angulos' unusual upbringing.
