The market is held twice a year among the gypsies or Roma people as Bulgarians call them. There are about 700,000 Roma in Bulgaria that are almost all devout Orthodox Christians who keep teenage boys and girls separate. Parents sometimes remove girls from school at 15 or even earlier to keep them from mixing with boys. The isolation is broken only by Internet chats and the bridal fairs.

Most girls at the bridal fair, even those too young to be considered for marriage, wear gobs of mascara, flashy jewelry and towering high-heels. The colors of the mini-dresses are flashy: electric pinks, blood reds, canary yellows. The boys wear tight black jeans and muscle shirts, often topped with black leather jackets. Few thousand people flock, many in cars rigged with speakers on the hoods to pump out Gypsy pop at full blast. Boys and girls dance side-by-side on the cars, shaking their hips in frenzy. The cost of a bride — between few hundred dollars to few thousand — has dropped in recent years as jobs have dried up. Prices are negotiable with parents, but they are higher for a "very beautiful" young woman with many suitors.

معظم الفتيات في سوق الزيجات، حتى الصغيرات على الزواج، يضعن كتلاً من الماسكارا والمجوهرات البراقة والكعوب الشاهقة العلو. وألوان الأثواب القصيرة (الميني) مبهرجة: الألوان وردية كهربائية وأحمر كالدم وأصفر كالكناري. أما الأولاد فيرتدون الجينز الأسود المحزق والقمصان الضيقة مظهرة عضلاتهم تعلوها في كثير من الأحيان السترات الجلدية السوداء. ويتدفق بضعة آلاف شخص إلى المهرجان، وتكون السيارات عديدة مجهزة بمكبرات صوت مركبة على مقدماتها لضخ موسيقى البوب الغجرية بأعلى صوت. والفتيان والفتيات يتراقصون معاً على السيارات ويهزون أوراكهم بجنون. كلفة العروس تتراوح ما بين بضعة مئات من الدولارات إلى بضعة آلاف و قد انخفضت في السنوات الأخيرة إذ جفت الوظائف. والأسعار قابلة للتفاوض مع أولياء الأمور لكنها أعلى للمرأة "الجميلة جدا" التي يكثر خطابها.
