The Naica Mine of Chihuahua, Mexico, is known for its extraordinary crystals. It is a lead, zinc and silver mine that has large voids containing crystals of selenite (gypsum) as large as 1.5 meters in diameter and 15 meters long. Naica has an underground magma chamber below it, heating mineral saturated ground water for over 500,000 years. During this time, the temperature of the water remained very stable at over 50°C. This allowed crystals to form and grow to immense sizes. At such temperature, with a humidity of 90-100 per cent, cavers wear protective suits and carry backpacks of ice-cooled air. | منجم نايتشا في تشيهواهوا بالمكسيك مشهور ببلوراته الاستثنائية. فهو منجم للرصاص والزنك والفضة وفيه كهوف كبيرة تحتوي على بلورات السيلينيت (الجبس) بأقطار 1.5 متر وأطوال تصل إلى 15 متراً. يوجد تحت المنجم فراغات بها حمم تؤدي إلى تسخين المياه المعدنية المشبعة منذ أكثر من لأكثر من 500,000 سنة. وخلال هذا الوقت، بقيت درجة حرارة الماء مستقرة جدا عند 50 درجة مئوية. وهذا ما سمح بتشكيل البلورات ونموها إلى هذه الأحجام هائلة. وفي مثل هذه الدرجات من الحرارة، مع رطوبة تصل إلى 90-100 في المائة، يرتدي مكتشفوا الكهوف سترات واقية ويحملون على ظهرهم مبردات هواء تعمل بالثلج. |
