Native to the hot deserts of Northern Africa and Asia east to northern China and Manchuria, this tiny hopping rodent is the ultimate survivalist. It can go its entire life without a single drop of water. Some people think it could die if it drinks water! Its body is so efficient at processing dry seeds that it creates water as a byproduct of digestion. To save every bit of moisture, its kidneys are incredibly powerful, producing urine that is almost solid.

2. The Thorny Devil Lizard   ـ2. سحلية الشيطان الشوكي

This Australian lizard looks like something out of a sci-fi movie, and its drinking method is just as strange. The Secret of not drinking is that It uses capillary action. It has microscopic grooves between its scales that act like straws. When it stands in a puddle or touches damp sand, the water is pulled up its legs, across its body, and directly into the corners of its mouth.

3. The Desert Tortoise   ـ3. سلحفاة الصحراء

While these tortoises can drink when they find a rare desert puddle, they often go a year or more without doing so. The Secret: They store water in their bladders like a canteen. They get most of their hydration from the cacti and grasses they eat, and their bodies are designed to reabsorb that stored water during long droughts.

4. Sand Gazelles   ـ4. غزلان الصحراء

Living in the Arabian Desert, these animals have adapted to some of the harshest conditions on Earth. The Secret: They can actually shrink their own organs (like the heart and liver) to reduce oxygen demand and lower the amount of water lost through respiration. They get their moisture from dew on plants and the succulents they eat at night.
