The small town of Braunau am Inn, on the Austrian border, is commonly remembered as the birthplace of Adolf Hitler. City officials would prefer that their picturesque town be remembered for something less infamous or perhaps more fun. The death of the city mayor, Hans Steininger, killed by his own beard, over 450 years ago.

تشتهر بلدة براونو آم إن الصغيرة، الواقعة على الحدود النمساوية، بأنها مسقط رأس أدولف هتلر. ويفضل مسؤولو البلدة أن يتم تذكر بلدتهم الخلابة بشيء أقل شهرة أو ربما أكثر إمتاعاً. وهو وفاة عمدة البلدة، هانز شتاينغر، الذي قتلته لحيته قبل أكثر من 450 عاماً.

Hans Steininger was the mayor of Braunau am Inn in 1567, and having been elected mayor six times already, he was a very popular person those days. His most characteristic physical feature was his beard, a two-meter-long. Steininger normally kept his facial hair carefully groomed and tucked in a special pocket of his jacket.

فقد كان هانز ستاينجر رئيسًا لبلدية براونو آم إن في عام 1567، وذلك بعد انتخابه عمدة ست مرات، فقد كان يحظى بشعبية كبيرة في تلك الأيام. وكانت لحيته التي يبلغ طولها مترين هي أكثر سماته الجسدية تمييزاً. كان شتاينجر بشكل دائم يحافظ على لحيته ويعتنى بها ولطولها يقوم بدسها في جيب خاص من سترته.

Unfortunately, one fateful night in October 1567, a fire broke out in the city and, and as is often the case, the disaster caused widespread panic. Steininger, as mayor of the city, tried to quell the commotion, his beard slipped out of his pocket. As he climbed a flight of stairs, in the midst of chaos, he stepped on his own beard and stumbled crashing down the stairs and breaking his neck.

ولسوء الحظ، في إحدى الليالي المصيرية في أكتوبر 1567، اندلع حريق كبير في البلدة، وكما هو الحال عادة، تسببت الكارثة في حالة من الذعر بين السكان. حاول شتاينجر، بصفته عمدة البلدة تهدئة الاضطراب، وكان أن انزلقت لحيته من جيبه. وبينما كان يصعد درجاً، وسط هذه الفوضى، داس على لحيته وتعثر بها فسقط على الدرج وكسر رقبته.

After his death, the city erected a monument in honor of its fallen mayor in the form of a huge stone relief on the side of church of St. Stephen, so that his legacy could never be forgotten. Residents also snipped off his majestic beard and placed for display in the Herzogsburg district museum. His beard has been chemically treated to prevent degradation. Over the past 450 years, the beard has attracted thousands of visitors eager to enjoy the famous deadly beard.

بعد وفاته، أقامت البلدة نصبًا تذكاريًا تكريماً لرئيس بلديتها الذي قتلته لحيته على شكل نصب حجري ضخم على جانب كنيسة القديس ستيفن، وذلك حتى لا تنسى ذكراه أبدًا. وقام السكان أيضًا بقص لحيته الرائعة ووضعها للعرض في متحف منطقة هيرزوغسبورغ. وقد تمت معالجة لحيته كيميائيًا لمنع تفسخها. وعلى مدى 450 عامًا الماضية، اجتذبت هذه اللحية آلاف الزوار المتحمسين لمشاهدة اللحية المميتة المشهورة.
