This ring and the following rings amazed me. Initially I thought they are made of rubies. Then I found out that the main gem in this Chopard masterpiece is not ruby, but a 9.6ct cabochon rubellite surrounded 12.2cts of rubellites, 5.5cts of yellow sapphires, and 2.6cts of brilliant-cut amethysts.

What is rubellite? How do it differ from ruby? And why famous jewel designers use rubellites rather than rubies?

أذهلني هذا الخاتم وكذلك الخواتم التالية. اعتقدت في البداية أنها مصنوعة من الياقوت. ثم اكتشفت أن الجوهرة الرئيسية في تحفة شوبارد هذه ليست ياقوتا، وإنما جوهرة روبيلايت مصقولة عيارها 9.6 قيراط ومحاطة بـ 12.2 قيراط من الروبيليتات و 5.5 قيراط من الزفير الأصفر و 2.6 قيراط من حجر الجمشت اللامع الرائع.

فما هو الروبيلايت؟ وكيف يختلف عن الياقوت؟ ولماذا يستخدم مصممو الجواهر المشهورين الروبيلايت بدلاً من الياقوت؟

The first thing I learned is that rubellites are rarer than rubies. The difference between a ruby and a rubellite lies in the structure and intensity of color. Rubellites are multi-faceted gemstones varying from a tender pink color to crimson red with pinches of purple and maintains its color under different lighting. Rubies have a higher density and a richer red undertone offering deep red tones only.

Second, rubelilite has another striking quality, it's pyroelectric, which means that upon heating the stone becomes electrically charged. It can be cut in several ways, but in keeping with the intensity of the color.

أول ما تعلمته هو أن حجر الروبيلايت نادر أكثر من الياقوت. ويكمن الاختلاف الكبير بين الياقوت والروبيلايت في بنية اللون وشدته. فالروبيلايت من الأحجار الكريمة التي تقطع بوجوه متعددة ويختلف لونها من لون وردي رقيق إلى أحمر قرمزي مع مسحة من اللون البنفسجي، وهو يحتفظ بلونه تحت الإضاءات المختلفة. بينما الياقوت بكثافة أعلى ودرجة حمراء أغنى وألوانه حمراء عميقة فقط.

ثانياً، يتميز الروبيلايت بصفة أخرى مدهشة وهي أنه كهربي-حراري، وهذا يعني أنه عند تسخينه يصبح الحجر مشحونًا كهربائيًا. ويمكن قطع حجر الروبيلايت بعدة طرق مع احتفاظه بقوة لونه.

Rubellite is a member of the tourmaline family of boron silicate gemstones which come in many other colors. Due to its crystal structure, most rubellite stones are imperfect to some degree. High quality rubellites can cost $400 to $1,000 a carat depending on color, size and clarity. Rubellites are mainly found in Brazil, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria and Pakistan.

الروبيلايت هو أحد أفراد عائلة التورمالين وهي أحجار سيليكات البورون التي توجد بألوان أخرى كثيرة. إذ ويمكن قطعه بعدة طرق، مع احتفاظه بشدة اللون. وبسبب هيكله البلوري، فإن معظم أحجار الروبيلايت غير نقية إلى حد ما. ويمكن أن يكلف الروبيلايت عالي الجودة ما بين 400 إلى 1000 دولار للقيراط حسب لونه وحجمه ووضوحه. ويوجد الروبيلايت بشكل رئيسي في البرازيل ومدغشقر وموزمبيق ونيجيريا وباكستان.

One of the strangest things I read about rubellite gemstone is that it has energies that could affect a person's life, wealth and health!!! Though I don't believe in any of the benefits, but I will mention them here, just to know.
