يصبح الذكر الصغير لسمك أبو شص جزءًا من جسدها مدى الحياة كمصنع للحيوانات المنوية.

At first, scientists were perplexed because they've never caught a male anglerfish. In addition, all female anglerfish have a lump or more on their bodies that looked like parasites. Only later did scientists discover that the lump is the remain of a male fish body who feeds on her blood and not more than a sperm factory. Weird, isn't it!!?

The tiny male anglerfish are born without any digestive system, so once they hatch, they have to find a female quickly to survive. Males possess well-developed olfactory organs at birth, which help them detect the scent of females. When a male finds a female, he quickly bites her body and releases an enzyme that digests his skin and her body to fuse to the level of the blood vessels in an eternal embrace and never releases from her again, feeding on her blood. The male then slowly loses all its body parts, except for the pair of gonads. These gonads release sperms when the female is ready to release the eggs.

تولد الذكور الصغيرة لسمك أبوشص بلا أي جهاز هضمي، لذلك فبمجرد أن تفقس، ولكي يعيش يجب عليها العثور على الإناث بسرعة. إذ أن لدى الذكور أجهزة شم متطورة عند الولادة تساعدهم على اكتشاف رائحة الإناث. وعندما يجد الذكر أنثى، يعضّ جسدها سريعا ويطلق إنزيمًا يهضم جلده وجسمها لينصهر معها حتى مستوى عروق الدم، في احتضان أبدي لا ينفك عنها مرة أخرى أبداً، ويتغذى على دمها. ومن بعدها يفقد الذكر ببطء معظم أجزاء جسمه، باستثناء زوج من الغدد التناسلية. تقوم الغدد التناسلية بإطلاق الحيوانات المنوية عندما تكون الأنثى جاهزة لإطلاق البيضات.

The diminutive male looks like an entirely different species, lacking the female's look.

Anglerfish, so named because it uses a lure as baits to "fish" its prey, which is actually a modified spine of dorsal fins that have migrated to its snout.

Naglerfish female may be more than 60 times the length and about a half-a-million times as heavy as male. Females could reach a length of 2 meters and weigh over 40 kg. Up to eight males can fuse into a single female in some species, though some taxa appear to have a "one male per female" rule.

Two males are fused into one female, they could be up to eight males.

When the female is ready to spawn, her "male appendage" is there, ready to release sperms to fertilize her egg. After fertilization, the female lays eggs (could exceed one million eggs) in a thin, transparent and gelatinous sheet, which can be 60 -90 cm wide and about 7 to 9 meter long. This egg sheet floats in water, till the eggs hatch into larvae. The larvae usually feed on the surface of the sea, until they mature.

There are over 300 extremely varied species of anglerfishes that inhabit seas from shallow to super-deep waters. But among the 160 deep-sea species, only some 25 engage in the aforementioned biting-fusing-mating, what is known as sexual parasitism.

Deep-sea anglerfishes lure their prey in the ocean darkness at depths between 300 and 5,000 meters using their bioluminescent fishing lure. This bioluminescence is the result of a large number of bacteria that produce a bluish or greenish light on the tip of its lure. While remaining motionless, the fish waves its lure back and forth, and waits for the prey to come closer to its mouth.
