لا تندهشوا، فالحمام وكذلك طيور الفلامنجو وبعض البطاريق تنتج حليباً لتغذية صغارها!

A pouch, like a mammary gland, in the bird's throat enlarge during the breeding season and secrete a thick milky substance. More amazingly, not only female pigeons, but males also produce milk in their crop, and in penguins, only males lactate!!

يوجد كيس في حلق الطائر، يشبه الغدد الثديية، يكبر خلال موسم التكاثر ويفرز مادة حليبية سميكة. والمدهش أكثر هو أن إناث الحمام ليست هي الوحيدة فقط التي تنتج الحليب في حوصلاتها بل وكذلك الذكور أيضاً، وفي طيور البطريق الذكور فقط هم من ينتجون الحليب!!

Like mammalian, milk production is controlled by the hormone prolactin. It contains protein (60%), fat (32–36%), carbohydrate (1–3%), minerals (calcium, potassium, sodium and phosphorus), IgA antibodies (important for the immune system) and assorted non-pathogenic bacteria.

وكمثل إنتاج الحليب في الثدييات يتم ذلك بواسطة هرمون البرولاكتين. وحليب الحمام يحتوي على البروتين (60٪) والدهون (32-36٪) والكربوهيدرات (1-3٪) والمعادن (الكالسيوم والبوتاسيوم والصوديوم والفوسفور) والأجسام المضادة إيغا (المهمة لجهاز المناعة) ومجموعة متنوعة من البكتيريا المفيدة.

Pigeon's milk begins to be produced a couple of days before the eggs are due to hatch. Pigeons usually lay one or at most two eggs. The baby squabs are fed on pure crop milk for the first week or so of life. The parents may cease to eat at this point in order to be able to provide the nestlings with milk uncontaminated by seeds, which the very young squabs would be unable to digest. After this the parents begin to introduce a proportion of adult food, softened by spending time in the moist conditions of the adult crop, into the mix fed to the squabs, until by the end of the second week they are being fed entirely on softened adult food.

يبدأ إنتاج حليب الحمام قبل بضعة أيام من موعد التفقيس المنتظر للبيضة. والحمام عادة ما يضع بيضة واحدة أو اثنتين على الأكثر. ويتم تغذية الزغاليل الصغيرة من حليب الحوصلة النقي في الأسبوع الأول من التفقيس أو نحو ذلك. وقد يتوقف الأبوان عن تناول الطعام في هذه المرحلة لكي يكونا قادرين على توفير صغارهما بحليب غير ملوثة بالبذور التي لا تستطيع الكتاكيت الصغار هضمها. وبعد ذلك يبدأ الأبوان بإدخال نسبة من غذاء الكبار في وجبة صغارها، تتم تطريتها بحفظها لفترة في رطوبة حوصلة الأبوان الرطبة، حيث تضاف إلى مزيج غذاء الكتكوت حتى نهاية الأسبوع الثاني وبعد ذلك يتم إطعامهم بالكامل من طعام الكبار المطرى.
