In a study published in March 2012, the journal of American Geophysical Union indicates that Venice of Italy is sinking into the water more than five times quicker than previously thought and the city is also gradually tilting eastwards into Adriatic Sea. A multi-billion-dollar effort is about to finish installing flood-protection barriers. Northern sections are dropping between 2 to 3mm per year, while the southern lagoon is subsiding by 3 to 4mm over the same period. The patches of land in Venice's 117 island lagoon are also sinking. Previous studies had shown that water levels in the former capital of the Maritime Venetian Republic had stabilized.
