In November 2009 and then in January 2011 disastrous floods had overtaken Jeddah by surprise. Now November and subsequently January are approaching and I thought Jeddah occupants may learn from their counter-persons in the rest of the world and be prepared for the next flood.

في نوفمبر (تشرين الثاني) 2009، وبعد ذلك في يناير (كانون الثاني) 2011 غرقت جدة في فيضانات أمطار مفاجئة. وشهري نوفمبر ويناير يقتربان. لذلك فكرت في أن أعرض بعض الإختراعات التي قد يتعلم منها قاطنو جدة وأن يستفيدوا من خبرات أقرانهم في بقية العالم وأن يكونوا مستعدين للفيضان القادم.

On 26 Jan 2011 I was stranded in my office due to torrential rain that suddenly flooded the city. From the window of my office I watched people literally swimming, cars halting, many tried to drive to the nearby flyover to save their cars. Crowds and crowds of cars jamming the flyover. I barely slept at office without electricity, phone or water. Next day at noon, I was brave enough to drive my car, which fortunately was not submerged in water, to go home at a speed that did not exceed one km/hr into rivers of flood water. Again fortunately my car did not stall during the trip that took over an hour to reach home. Usually it takes only 7 minutes.

في 26 يناير 2011 تقطعت بي السبل وحبست في مكتبي بسبب الامطار الغزيرة التي غمرت المدينة فجأة. ومن نافذة مكتبي شاهدت الناس يسبحون السباحة والسيارات تتوقف وكثيرون يحاولون قيادة سياراتهم نحو الكوبري (الجسر) القريب لإنقاذ سياراتهم من الغرق. فكانت حشود وحشود من السيارات تزدحم على الجسر. ليلتها بالكاد نمت في مكتبي دون كهرباء ولا ماء ولا هاتف. وفي اليوم التالي عند الظهيرة، كنت شجاعا بما فيه الكفاية للنزول إلى سيارتي، والتي لحسن الحظ لم تغمرها المياه، وقيادتها باتجاه منزلي بسرعة لا تتجاوز كيلومتر واحد في ساعة تتلاطم بأنهار من مياه الفيضان. ولحسن الحظ مرة أخرى لم تتوقف سيارتي خلال الرحلة التي استغرقت أكثر من ساعة للوصول إلى المنزل. وهي عادة تستغرق فقط 7 دقائق.

Be prepared with plastic sheets   جهز ملايات بلاستيكية كبيرة



Own a flood resistant home   اقتن بيت مقاوم للفيضان


Use floating cooker   استخدم موقد عائم


Floating restaurant   مطعم عائم


Supermarket Passage   ممر للسوبرماكت


Motorcycle parking   موقف الدرجات النارية


Convert the city into a huge Aqua Park   حوّل المدينة إلى ملاهي مائية ضخمة
