If you are asked, what do you use butter for? I am sure your answer will be in food. But there are people who use butter for something else! No, don't let your mind drift away. I meant as media for artistic sculptures presented as attractions at some fairs, on banquet tables and even as small decorative butter pats at high end restaurants.

Butter carving was an ancient craft in Tibet, Babylon, Roman Britain and elsewhere. The earliest documented butter sculptures were in Europe on banquet tables in 1536.

نحت الزبدة هو حرفة قديمة كانت في التبت وبابل وبريطانيا الرومانية وأماكن أخرى. وأقدم تماثيل الزبدة الموثقة في أوروبا كانت توضع على موائد الولائم في عام 1536.

In 1876, Caroline Shawk Brooks of Arkansas, USA, created a sculpture in a bowl depicting Yolande, Duchess of Lorraine, the heroine of Henrik Hertz's play. The bowl was kept cool with ice from below. It was this masterpiece that ignited popular interest in butter sculpting as a public art form.

في عام 1876، عرضت كارولين شوك بروكس من أركنساس بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية تمثالاً في وعاء يصور يولاندي، دوقة لورين، بطلة مسرحية هنري هيرتز. وتم الإبقاء على الوعاء باردا بالثلج أسفله. كانت هذه التحفة هي التي أشعلت الاهتمام الشعبي بمنحوتات الزبدة كشكل من أشكال الفن العام.
