نباتات الجرة الكبيرة يمكنها أن تلتهم الفئران والسحالي والضفادع.

Pitcher plants or monkey cups (Nepenthes) are carnivorous plants. They mostly are insect eaters, but larger pitchers can eat rats, lizards and frogs. Their prey-trapping mechanism features a deep cavity filled with liquid. Foraging, flying or crawling insects are attracted by the sweet nectar and visual lures into the cavity formed by the cupped leaf. The sides of the pitcher are slippery and may be grooved in such a way so as to ensure that the insects cannot climb out. They drown the insect, and the body of it is gradually dissolved by enzymes or bacteria. The prey items are converted into a solution of amino acids, peptides, phosphates, ammonium and urea, from which the plant obtains its mineral nutrition.

نباتات الجرة أو أكواب القرود (نيبنثيس) هي نباتات آكلة للحوم. وهي في معظمها أكلة للحشرات، ولكن نباتات الجرة الكبيرة يمكنها أن تأكل الفئران والسحالي والضفادع. إذ أن لها آلية لصيد الفريسة عبر تجويف عميق مليء بالسائل. فالحشرات الباحثة عن الطعام أو الطائرة أو الزاحفة تنجذب نحو الرحيق الحلو والإبهار البصري إلى داخل تجويف الفخ الذي تكونه الأوراق المقعرة. وتكون جوانب الجرة زلقة و محززة بطريقة تضمن عدم خروج الحشرات التي تقع في الشرك. فتغرق الحشرات في السائل وتذوب أجسامها تدريجيا عن طريق الانزيمات أو البكتيريا. ويتم تحويل مكونات الفريسة إلى أحماض أمينية وببتيدات وأمونيوم وفوسفات ويوريا، ومنها تحصل النبتة على غذائها من المعادن المغذية.

الفرائس تنجذب نحو الرحيق الحلو والإبهار البصري لتقع داخل تجويف الفخ.

These plants live in areas of high rainfall and that pitchers do not overflow with rain water, the pitchers has umbrellas to divert the rain in addition to a small gap in the zipped-up leaf margins allows excess water to flow out of the pitcher. The name monkey cups refers to the fact that monkeys have been observed drinking rainwater from these plants. There are about 120 species in the Nepenthes genus and they grow in the Old World tropics (mostly in the Malay archipelago).

تعيش هذه النباتات في المناطق غزيرة الأمطار، ولضمان عدم إمتلاء الجرار بمياه الأمطار فإن لها مظلات لتغيير مسار المطر وكذلك فتحات صغيرة في طرف كل ورقة تسمح بتدفق المياه الزائدة إلى خارج الجرة. أما إسم أكواب القرود فقد أطلق عليها لأنه لوحظ أن القرود تشرب مياه الأمطار من جرار هذه النباتات. وهناك حوالي 120 نوعا في نباتات الجرة تنمو في المناطق المدارية من العالم القديم (ومعظمها في أرخبيل الملايو).
