Manila, the Philippine capital, is home to about 20 million. It is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. 40% of the population lives below the poverty line. Thousands are making cemeteries their home. Hundreds of wooden and corrugated iron shack perched on top of stacked tombs. Stone and marble sarcophaguses inside the mausoleums became beds.

مانيلا، عاصمة الفلبين، هي موطن لحوالي 20 مليون نسمة. وهي واحدة من أكثر المدن اكتظاظاً بالناس في العالم. ويعيش حوالي 40٪ من السكان تحت خط الفقر. وهناك آلاف ممن جعلوا المقابر بيوتاً لهم. إذ تقبع مئات الأكواخ الخشبية والصفيح المموج فوق القبور المكدسة فوق بعضها. أما الأحجار ورخام التوابيت داخل الأضرحة فقد أصبح أسرة للنوم.

Hidden from view, the cemetery is a thriving city with vast and complex network of alleys, tightly lined by tens of thousands of mausoleums and tombs. Electricity is supplied from a nearby street, while drinking water comes from one of a dozen wells dug around the cemetery grounds. There are basketball hoops, fast-food stalls serving snacks and cigarettes to the residents and those attending funerals or visiting loved ones. There are karaoke parlors, restaurants and even Internet cafes. Yet, this is still a fully functioning cemetery, with up to 80 funerals taking place each day. Many of the cemetery residents have found work among the dead. Teenagers carry coffins for 50 Filipino pesos—about 50 American cents. Children collect scrap metal, plastic, and other garbage to sell. Others look over graves, keeping them clean and protecting them from robbers, who have been known to steal the bones and the ornaments off the tombs.

المقبرة هي بلدة مزدهرة مخفية عن الأنظار فيها شبكة واسعة ومعقدة من الأزقة تصطف بإحكام بين عشرات الآلاف من الأضرحة والقبور. ويتم تزويد الكهرباء من شارع مجاور، في حين تأتي مياه الشرب من واحد من اثني عشر بئرا حفرت حول موقع المقبرة. وهناك أماكن لكرة السلة وأكشاك للوجبات السريعة تقدم الوجبات الخفيفة والسجائر للمقيمين وكذلك للذين يحضرون الجنازات أو لزيارة الأموات. وهناك صالونات كاريوكي ومطاعم وحتى مقاهي الانترنت. ومع ذلك فالمقبرة تعمل بشكل كامل حيث أن الجنازات اليومية تصل الى 80 جنازة. وقد وجد العديد من سكان المقبرة عملاً بين الأموات. المراهقين فالمراهون يحملون النعوش مقابل 50 بيزو فليبيني، أي حوالي 50 سنتا أمريكياً. والأطفال يجمعون الخردة المعدنية والبلاستيك والنفايات الأخرى لبيعها. وآخرون يحرسون بعض القبور ويحفظون على نظافتها ويحمونها من اللصوص، الذين يسرقون العظام وزينة القبور.
