Giant clams can be 1.2 meters in length and weighing more than 220 kg. They also have a long lifespan of 100 years or more. Some marine biologists believe that some of the larger ones that have been found off the East Coast of the U.S. are over 200 years old.

قد يصل طول المحار العملاق إلى 1.2 متراً وقد يزن أكثر من 220 كجم. وقد تصل أعمارها أكثر من 100 سنة. ويعتقد بعض علماء الأحياء البحرية أن بعضاً من أكبر المحارات التي تم العثور عليها قبالة الساحل الشرقي للولايات المتحدة يزيد عمرها على 200 سنة.

Giant clams are often been misunderstood in history and were once labeled the killer clams or man-eating clams! However, the clam is not aggressive at all and while it is certainly capable of gripping a person, the shell's closing action is too slow to pose a serious threat for human. They consume the sugars and proteins produced by the billions of algae that live in their tissues; in exchange, they offer the algae a safe home and regular access to sunlight for photosynthesis, basking by day below the water's surface with their fluted shells open and their multi-colored mantles exposed. وكثيرا ما أسيء فهم هذا المحار الضخم عبر التاريخ، إذ كان يوصف في وقت من الأوقات بالمحار القاتل أو المحار آكل البشر! رغم أن هذا المحار ليس عدوانياً على الإطلاق، إلا انه قادر بالتأكيد على الإمساك بالإنسان، ولكن آلية إقفال الصدفة بطيئة جدا ولا تشكل أي تهديد خطير للإنسان. وهذه المحارات تستهلك السكريات والبروتينات التي تنتجها المليارات من الطحالب التي تعيش داخل أنسجتها، وفي المقابل، فإنها توفر للطحالب منزلاً آمناً وتؤمن لها الحصول على أشعة الشمس بشكل منتظم حتى تقوم بالتمثيل الضوئي، حيث تتشمس أطرافها المتعددة الألوان نهاراً تحت سطح الماء عبر صدفتها المحززة المفتوحة للضوء. كما أن المحارات تحصل على المواد المغذية عن طريق سحب وفلترة العوالق التي تمر داخلها. ويمكنكم قراءة المزيد على ويكيبيديا.
