Males, of all species have ways of enticing females. Some through their colorful feathery dances, like male peacocks and some through loud colorful songs. But what is happening underwater in the semi-tropical region of Amami Oshima in Japan is different. Love presents itself in a totally innovative way.

While diving roughly 25 meters below sea level, Yoji Ookata spotted on the seabed a geometric, circular structure measuring roughly 2 meters in diameter precisely engraved in the sand and consisting of grooves symmetrically radiating from the center, as if done by an artist carefully working with tools. For its resemblance to crop circles and stories of UFO, Yoji decided to come back with a TV crew to figure out who would be possibly making it.

فقد لاحظ يوجي أوكاتا أثناء غوصه عند قاع البحر وعلى عمق حوالي 25 متر شكلاً هندسيأ دائرياً قطره حوالي مترين تقريبا محفور بدقة في الرمال يتكون من أخاديد متناظرة تشع من مركز الدائرة، كما لو أن فناناً حفرها بعناية باستخدام أدوات حفر. ولتشابهها بدوائر المحاصيل المجهولة والتي تنسج حولها قصص احتراقها بالأطباق الطائرة، قررت يوجي أن يعود مع طاقم التلفزيون لمعرفة من الذي يقوم بهذا العمل. |
Underwater cameras showed that the artist was a small male puffer fish who, using only his flapping fin, tirelessly worked day and night to carve the circular shape. The talented artist – best known in Japan as a delicacy, albeit a potentially poisonous one – even takes small shells, cracks them, and lines the inner grooves as if decorating his piece. Further observation revealed this artistic shape attracts female puffer fish to the male where they would mate and lay eggs in the center of the circle. In fact, the scientists observed that the more ridges, the more likely a female would mate be attracted. Observers believe that the little sea shells serve as vital nutrients to newborns as the eggs. Through experiments back at lab, scientists showed that the grooves and ridges helped neutralize currents, protecting the eggs from being tossed around and potentially exposing them to predators. | أظهرت الكاميرات تحت الماء أن الفنان هو ذكر صغير من أسماك البخاخ، حيث يقوم باستخدام زعانفة بلا كلل ليلا ونهارا ولمدة اسبوع لنحت هذا الشكل الدائري. هذا الفنان الموهوب - والمشهور في اليابان كطبق شهي ومعروف أن تقطيعه بطريقة خاطئة قد يجعل لحمه ساماً - يأخذ أصدافاً صغيرة ويفلقها ويصفها على خطوط الأخاديد الداخلية كما لو أنه يزين لوحته الدائرية. وبالمراقبة لوحظ أنه يصتع هذا العمل الفني لاجتذاب أنثى من صنفه للتتزاوج معها لتضع بيضها في مركز الدائرة. وفي الواقع لاحظ العلماء أنه كلما كثرت الأخاديد كلما كانت أكثر جاذبية للإناث. ويعتقد العلماء أن الأصداف الصغيرة المفلوقة تفيد كغذاء حيوي للصغار عندما يفقسون من البيض. وخلال التجارب المخبرية لاحظ العلماء أن الأخاديد والتلال تساعد على تحييد التيارات وحماية البيض من البعثرة والتعرض الى الإلتهام. |
