The Electric Guitars was invented in 1931. It then became a necessity in jazz music. During the 1950s and 1960s, the electric guitar became the most important instrument in pop music. Unlike traditional guitars, that amplify vibrations through their wooden bodies, electric guitars produce vibrations that are very weak to be heard. So pickups are used to convert the string vibrations into electrical impulses that are amplified and sent to loudspeakers.

اخترع الغيتار الكهربائي في عام 1931. ثم أصبح ضرورة في موسيقى الجاز. وخلال الخمسينات والستينات من القرن الماضي أصبح الغيتار الكهربائي أهم أداة في موسيقى البوب. وهو على عكس الغيثارات التقليدية والتي تضخم الصوت عبر أجسامها الخشبية، فإن الإهتزازات الصادرة عن أوتار الغيتارات الكهربائية ضعيفة جدا ويصعب سماعها. لذلك تستخدم لاقطات لتحويل اهتزاز الأوتار إلى نبضات كهربائية يتم تضخيمها وإرسالها إلى مكبرات الصوت.
