The subject seems to be science fiction story. But it is real and about 30 children conceived from this technique have been born, 17 of them from an American IVF clinic between 1996 and 2002, when US government authorities put a stop to it. The technique is called "cytoplasmic transfer". What is it and why it is used?

قد يبدو الموضوع كقصة من الخيال العلمي. ولكنها حقيقية، إذ قد ولد حوالي 30 مولودا بهذه التقنية، 17 منهم من عيادات التلقيح الصناعي الأميركية بين عامي 1996 و 2002، عندما أوقفت سلطات الحكومية الأمريكية العمل بها. وتسمى هذه التقنية "نقل السيتوبلازم". فما هي هذه الطريقة ولماذا يتم استخدامها؟

Thirteen-year-old Alana Saarinen is one of those children who have three biological parents.

ألانا سارينن (13 عاما) هي واحدة من هؤلاء الأطفال الذين لديهم ثلاثة آباء بيولوجيين.

Mitochondrial disease involves a genetic mutation that can cause a number of health problems, including seizures, blindness, heart problems, and liver disease. About 4,000 people are born with the condition in the U.S. ever year. Because the disease is passed down from mother to child, many women with the condition decide to adopt rather than run the risk of having an affected baby. Scientists were able to replace the defect mitochondrial of the cell using Cytoplasmic transfer which was pioneered in the late 1990s at the St Barnabus Institute in New Jersey, US. The technique requires a donor mother (third parent) where her egg cell healthy cytoplasm is taken to replace the affected egg cell cytoplasm of the conceiving mother.

أمراض خلل الميتوكوندريا هي طفرة جينية يمكن أن تسبب عددا من المصاعب الصحية لمن يحملها، بما في ذلك الصرع والعمى ومشاكل القلب وأمراض الكبد. ويولد حوالي 4000 شخص بهذه الحالة في الولايات المتحدة كل عام. ولأن المرض ينتقل من الأم إلى الطفل، فإن العديد من النساء الحاملات لهذا الخلل يقررن تبني الأطفال خوفا من خطر إصابة المولود إذا حملوا. وقد تمكن العلماء من استبدال الميتوكوندريا المصابة بالخلل في البويضة المراد تلقيحها بنقل السيتوبلازم وهي تقنية اصبح معهد سانت برنابوس في نيو جيرسي، الولايات المتحدة رائدا فيها في أواخر التسعينيات. وتتطلب هذه التقنية بويضة من الأم المانحة (الأم الثانية) بحيث يؤخذ سيتوبلاسما بيوضتها الصحية لتحل محل سيتوبلازم بيوضة الأم المصابة والتي تريد الحمل.
