Which do you find more attractive, whitened or blackened teeth? I bet you would say no for blackened teeth. Why? Because that is what we are raised at. But imagine that beauty is coupled with blackened teeth in many tribes of Southeast Asia. In Japan tooth blackening was known as Ohagura. It was believed to enhance sex appeal in addition to maintaining healthy teeth. Linking tooth blackening to a prolonged set of teeth is not just a belief; studies have supported that lacquered teeth stay longer.

Though teeth blackening tradition is vanishing it is still practiced in some tribes in Vietnam, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines. Back in 1938, a French survey found 80% of Vietnam's countryside folk had blackened teeth.
