Few years ago, during a trip to Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand, I took an organized tour that included a visit to "Long Neck Tribe" village. Many call them the Padong tribe, but they prefer to be called Kayan Lahwi. They are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic minority of Burma (Myanmar) fled to Thai borders in the late 1980s and early 1990s due to conflict in Burma. Long Neck refugee villages became tourist attractions, self-sufficient on tourist revenue. Kayan Women are distinguished by wearing brass coils around their necks to lengthen them.

منذ عدة سنوات خلال رحلتي إلى شيانغ ماي في شمال تايلاند، أخذت رحلة سياحية شملت زيارة لقرية "قبيلة طويلات الرقاب". الكثير يطلق عليهم اسم قبيلة بادونغ ولكنهم يفضلون أن يسموا بـ كيان لاهوي. وهم أقلية عرقية تيبتية بورمية من بورما (ميانمار) فروا إلى الحدود التايلاندية في أواخر الثمانينات وأوائل التسعينات بسبب الصراع الدائر في بورما. وأصبحت قرى اللاجئين من طويلات الرقاب من مناطق الجذب السياحي مكتفين ذاتيا بالإيرادات السياحية. فنساء قبيلة كيان يتميزن بلبس لفائف نحاسية حول رقابهن لإطالتها.

لا لم تطل رقبتي! إذ لديهم لفائف نحاسية مفتوحة من الخلف خصصت للسياح.

Girls start wearing brass rings in early ages.

تبدأ الفتيات بلبس الحلقات النحاية في سن مبكر.

Girls first start to wear coil when they are around five years old. Over the years coils are replaced by longer ones. The brass coil pushes the collar bone down and compresses the rib cage. The neck itself is not lengthened; the appearance of a stretched neck is created by the deformation of the clavicle.

تبدأ الفتيات بوضع أول لفافة عندما تكون في الخامسة من عمرها. ويتم استبدال اللفافات على مر السنين بلفافات أطول. تقوم لفائف النحاس بدفع عظمة الترقوة إلى أسفل وتضغط القفص الصدري. وهذا لا يطول الرقبة نفسها؛ وإنما تظهر وكأنها طالت نتيجة تباعد وتشوه الترقوة.

Nobody, even the Kayans themselves, know why coils are worn or when did it become a tradition. Some suggest that they protect women from becoming slaves by making them less attractive to other tribes. Others theorized that the coils are to look more attractive. It has also been suggested that the coils give the women resemblance to a dragon, an important figure in Kayan folklore . The coils might be meant to protect from tiger bites. But for sure it is part of their tradition.

لا أحد يعرف، حتى أفراد قبيلة كيان أنفسهم، لماذا تلبس اللفائف أو متى أصبحت تقليدا. يقترح البعض أنها تحمي المرأة من أن تستعبدها القبائل المعادية إذا أسرت لأنها تصبح أقل جاذبية. وهناك نظرية معاكسة بأن اللفائف تجعل المرأة أكثر جاذبية. وهناك اخرون يقترحون أنها نوع من التشبه بالتنين، الذي يعتبر شخصية مهمة في فولكلور قبيلة كيان. وقد يكون المقصود في اللفائف حماية النساء من قضم النمور لرقابهن. ولكن من المؤكد أنه جزء من تقاليدهم.
