The funniness and cuteness of owls stems from the way they gaze and the movement of their heads. Here are some amazing facts about these nocturnal predatory birds, probably you never heard before.

تنبع طرافة وظرافة طيور البوم من طريقة تحديق نظرها ومن طريقة تحريك رؤوسها. إليكم بعض الحقائق المذهلة عن هذه الطيور الليلية الجارحة، ربما لم تسمعوا بها من قبل.

Do you know, for example, that owls don't have movable eyeballs, but rather tube-shaped eyes that are completely immobile, providing binocular vision which fully focuses on their prey and boosts depth perception. So, owls can see clearly for long distances, but fail to see things close to their eyes clearly. To compensate for non-movable eyeballs, owls can turn their heads as much as 270 degrees.

Owls have three eyelids that protect their huge eyes. The first lid for blinking, the second for sleeping and the third for peeking.	وللبومة ثلاثة جفون تحمي عيناها الكبيرتين: أول جفن لترمش، الثاني للنوم، الثالث لاختلاس النظر.
Many owl species have asymmetrical ears. When located at different heights on the owl's head, their ears are able to pinpoint the location of sounds in 3D dimensions.	العديد من أنواع البومة لها آذان غير متماثلة. ولكونها تقع على ارتفاعات مختلفة من رأس البومة، فإن أذنيها قادرة على تحديد موقع الأصوات بأبعاد ثلاثية.
Owls have very fine feathers, this gives them a unique feature, quiet flight. Their wings do not make noise, so they can easily catch preys.	لدى البومة ريشٌ ناعم جدآ وهذا يعطيها خاصية فريدة وهي الطيران الهادئ، فلا تحدث أجنحتها صوتاً، وبذلك تستطيع اصطياد فريستها بكل سهولة.

There are more than 200 species of owls found in the world.	هناك أكثر من 200 صنف من طيور البوم موجودة في العالم.
The sound an owl produces is called hooting. But, not all owls hoot! Barn Owls make hissing sounds, the Eastern Screech-Owl whinnies like a horse, and Saw-whet Owls sound like, well, an old whetstone sharpening a saw. Hence the name.	يسمى صوت البومة هُناد (يقال هَنَدَ البوم). وليس كل بوم يهند! فبومة الحظائر تصدر هسيسا والبومة الشرقية الصارخة تصهل كالحصان وبومة شحذ-المنشار تصدر صوتا يشبه صوت حجر الشحذ القديم وهو يشحذ منشارا. ومن هنا أتت تسميتها هذه.

Owls are considered very useful birds for agriculture and environment, especially as they rid fields and farms of rodents that damage plantation.

تعتبر البومة من الطيور المفيدة جداً للزراعة والبيئة، خصوصاً أنها تخلص الحقول والمزارع من القوارض التي تتلف الزرع.

A group of owls is called a parliament, probably because they were a symbol of wisdom for old Greek.

No bird had contradicting views in different cultures such as owls. Though Greeks considered it as a symbol of wisdom, Pharaohs considered it as a sacred symbol of death leading to a second life, and it was associated with the vow of annihilation and loss in the middle ages in Europe. Arabs considered it a sign of badness and ugliness.
But this historically and culturally negative view has begun to change over time.

وفي الإنكليزية يسمى تجمع مجموعة طيور البومة بالبرلمان. ربما لأنها كانت عند الإغريق القدماء تعتبر رمزا للحكمة.

ما من طائر حفِلت سيرته بالتناقضات لدى الثقافات المختلفة تاريخيا مثل البومة. فبينما اعتبرها الإغريق رمزاً للحكمة اعتبرها الفراعنة رمزاً مقدساً للموت الذي يفضي إلى حياة أخرى ثانية، وارتبط ذكرها بنُذُر الفناء والضياع في عصور أوروبا الوسطى وعند العرب ضرب بها المثل في الشؤم والقبح.
لكن هذه النظرة السلبية تاريخياً وثقافياً بدأت تتغير مع الزمن.
