The concept has been proven by Kor Ecologic a small company located in Winnipeg - Canada who built the Urbee, the first car to have entire body 3D printed using Stratasys 3D printer. Urbee is a hybrid light weight car concept that was designed for the 2010 X-Prize Competition — the eco-friendly vehicle able to get up to 200 mpg on the highway and 100 mpg in city conditions using either gasoline or ethanol.

بدلاً من الورق والحبر تقوم هذه الطابعات بتشكيل الأجسام ثلاثية الأبعاد باستخدام مواد بلاستيكية أو بوليمر او جص أو مواد أخرى مُسيلَة في تشكيل المنتج طبقة فوق طبقة. ولتبسيط الفكرة إذا استخدم شخص مسدس الغراء وقام بتنقيط نقطة فوق نقطة فإنه يستطيع عمل مجسم. وهذا تقريباً ما قامت به الطابعات ثلاثية الأبعاد في طباعة جسم السيارة أوربي. لذلك لا تستغرب إن جاء زمن تقوم بطبع سيارتك او دراجتك النارية او ملابسك أو حذاءك بنفسك وفق تصميماتك الخاصة ثم تقوم باستعمالها فوراً.
إن تكنولوجيا الطباعة المجسمة يلغي الحاجة إلى الصب والأدوات والتصنيع والإنهاءات اليدوية، ويعطي سرعة إنجاز لا تصدق عند تغيير التصميم أو حتى خلق نموذج جديد.
