Laughter is a rich experience and expression gifted to human beings. Thus there are several shades of smiling and laughing expressions. They involve elaborate neurological and physiological processes. Such laughter is not seen in animals. But one cannot deny occurrence of primitive laughter in animals.

الضحك هو تجربة غنية وتعبير وهبه الله للبشر. لذلك فهناك أشكال متعددة لتعبيرات الابتسام والضحك عند البشر. وهذه التعبيرات تنطوي على عمليات عصبية وفسيولوجية معقدة، لا يوجد مثلها في الحيوانات. ولكن لا يمكن للمرء أن ينكر وجود نوع بدائي من الضحك عند الحيوانات.

In fact, most mammals, from rats (chirps beyond the range of human hearing) to dogs (huffing and panting excitedly) can be shown to demonstrate laughter-like responses to certain stimuli, with laughter proving to be just as contagious between animals as it is between humans; when one dog laughs, another may be stimulated to do so.

في الواقع يمكن إثبات أن معظم الثدييات تضحك استجابة لمؤثرات محددة، وذلك من الفئران (التي تصوي بأصوات خارج نطاق السمع البشري) وحتى الكلاب (التي تنبح بغرور وتتهافت بحماس). وكما أن الضحك عند البشر معدٍ، فالضحك معدٍ أيضاً عند الحيوانات، فعندما يضحك كلب فإن ذلك يحفز كلباً آخر على الضحك.
