The Cannonball Tree is a spectacular tree during flowering season. The whole trunk is covered by fuchsiaflowers. It is a tropical and subtropical tree. The tree got its name from the shape and size of its fruits which resemble cannon balls. The fruit is large, spherical and woody ranging from 15 to 24cm in diameter. A single tree can bear as many as 200 or 300 fruits.

شجرة كرات المدفع لها منظر مذهل خلال موسم الإزهار. فالجذع كله يصبج مغطى بزهور لونها فوشيا. وهي شجرة استوائية وشبه استوائية. وقد استمدت الشجرة اسمها من شكل وحجم ثمارها التي تشبه كرات المدفع. ثمارها كبيرة وكروية وخشبية ويتراوح قطر كل منها ما بين 15 و 24 سم. ويمكن للشجرة الواحدة أن تحمل ما يصل إلى 200 أو 300 كرة.

When the fruits ripen and fall without notice, they usually burst open with a loud crack, and the foul smell they give off attracts animals that spread the seeds within the fruit via their dung. Their fall can cause serious injury to any victim who may be under.

عندما تنضج الثمار تصبح كرات خشبية قاسية وتسقط دون سابق إنذار على الأرض فتنفجر عادةً مع صوت قوي وتخرج منها رائحة كريهة تجذب الحيوانات التي تأكل محتواها الذي يحوي بذورا وتنشر البذور عبر روثها الى أماكن أخرى. ويمكن أن يتسبب سقوطها في إصابة خطيرة لأي ضحية قد تكون  تحتها.

Although the Cannonball Tree is believed to be native to the tropical forests of north-eastern South America, according to old Indian texts, the tree has been growing in India for the past two or three thousand years.

على الرغم من أنه يُعتقد أن موطن شجرة كرات المدفع هو  الغابات الاستوائية في شمال شرق أمريكا الجنوبية، إلا أنه وفقًا للنصوص الهندية القديمة، كانت الشجرة تنمو في الهند منذ ألفي أو ثلاثة آلاف عام على الأقل.
