Photographer Andrew Newey was one of the few that have witnessed the extraordinary wild honey hunting ceremonies of the Gurung tribe at the Himalayan foothills of central Nepal, which takes place twice a year. Wild hives are located on steep cliffs tens of meters up in the air.

Once smoked the hunter pokes the honeycomb using a sharpened stick to drop it.

Before collecting the wild honey, the hunters sacrifice both food and animals to appease their gods. Then, tribe members make the 3-hour trek to the steep cliffs. While hunters use smoke to distract bees, this doesn't prevent them from getting stung. Painful stings, rope burns and blisters are all part of the wild honey hunting experience. Gurung honey hunt has taken place for hundreds of years. But in recent times, dwindling wild bee populations have negatively impacted the tradition.

Once back to village, they enjoy the sweetness of the honeycomb.
