Food carving actually dates back to the 13th century and began with fruits and vegetables. Cheese is a newer (and slightly easier!) medium than most. Any semi-firm cheese: cheddar, Monterey Jack, gouda, or a firm cheese like Parmesan works well.

Many ladies have excelled in carving big cheese sculptures. The British food artist Prudence Staite hand sculpted the shown tractor to celebrate the launching of Lidl Ireland's range of Rathdaragh Irish cheese at the 2013 National Ploughing Championships, the biggest Agricultural Show in Europe.
