What do think, could sleeping on the upper shelf of a closet be comfortable?

Strange enough this was literally what many people in Brittany region in France used to do. They slept inside what is called in French "Lit Clos" or Box Bed!!

من الغريب أن هذا هو ما كان يفعله الكثيرون من سكان منطقة بريتاني في فرنسا. فقد كانوا ينامون داخل ما يسمى بالفرنسية "Lit Clos" أو السرير الصندوقي!!

I have just found some very interesting old post cards shot in late 19th century representing life around box beds (in French Autous des Lits Clos) the traditional furnishing in homes with usually only one room.

فلقد وجدت بعض البطاقات البريدية القديمة جدًا والمثيرة للإهتمام والتي تم التقاطها في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر وتمثل الحياة حول الأسرة الصندوقية (باللغة الفرنسية Autous des Lits Clos) وهي عادة الأثاث التقليدي في المنازل التي تحتوي على غرفة واحدة فقط.

Another strange thing, during the 16th and 17th century, closet-beds were much smaller. Lying down was associated with death, and therefore box beds were designed to sleep in a half-upright position.

أمر غريب آخر، هو أنه خلال القرنين السادس عشر والسابع عشر، كانت الأسرة الصندوقية أصغر بكثير. إذ ارتبط آنذاك الاستلقاء أفقياً بالموت، فلذلك صممت الأسرة الصندوقية للنوم في وضع نصف واقف.

Some closed-beds were built one above the other in a double-decker, two-story arrangement. In this case, young people were sleeping upstairs. Beneath them were often drawers that are pulled out to provided beds for babies and toddlers. They were the main furniture of rural houses in Brittany until the 20th century. Often carved and decorated, and were the pride of their owners. The box-bed allowed some privacy and helped keep people warm during winter. Similar enclosed bed furniture was also found in western Britain; Devon, Cornwall and Wales, particularly in Gower. In the Netherlands the closet-bed, or bedstede, was in common use into the 19th century, particularly in farmhouses in the countryside.
