Botox is an abbreviation of a combined word: Botulinum Toxin, which is a protein and neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. There are seven types of theses toxins, each with different characteristics and medical uses. Currently some became popularly used to paralyze facial muscles, resulting in a masking skin wrinkles. But this also hijacks emotional facial expressions. So you may not be able to distinguish laugh from cry. Though some benefit can be achieved on the short run. But many mishaps could happen. بوتوكس أو بوتاكس هي كلمة مدمجة من بوتيولينيوم وتوكسين (تعني سموم البوتيولينيوم بالانجليزية). وهي عبارة عن بروتينات وسموم تستخرج من بكتيريا تسمى كولسترديوم بوتلينيوم. هناك سبعة أنواع من هذه السموم تختلف خصائصها واستخداماتها الطبية وقد انتشر استخدام بعضها لشلّ عضلات الوجه مما ينتج عنه اخفاء لتجاعيد الجلد. ولكن هذا أيضاً يلغي تعابير الوجه العاطفية. فقد لا تستطيع تمييز الضحك عن البكاء. ورغم أن بعض التحسن قد يحدث للبعض على المدى القصير إلا أن هناك حالات من التشوه. وفيما يلي بعض المشاهير حيث شوه التجميل وجوههن.

ويمكن أن يسبب توكسين البوتولينوم تسمماً خطيراً يهدد حياة الإنسان والحيوان. وقد وصف بأنه "سم السجق" و "السم الدهني" وذلك لأن البكتيريا التي تنتج السم غالبا ما تسبب التسمم بتكاثرها في منتجات اللحوم التي يتم إعداده وتداولها بطريقة غير سليمة.
