In an earlier article I proposed the "Chance for Immigration and Instant Citizenship" on Mars. But do you know what it takes for 174kg to be lifted from Earth, moved in space for seven months and finally land on Mars? Science fiction movies give us the impression that space travel is an easy task. But read the following and watch the video below to appreciate the reality.

Liftoff towards Mars   الإقلاع باتجاه المريخ

On January 4, 2004, a robotic vehicle named Spirit (or MER-A: Mars Exploration Rover-A), landed successfully on Mars after seven months of space travel. Spirit left earth on June 10, 2003. Spirit functioned effectively for over 5 years, during which it traveled 7.73km on Mars, allowing extensive geological analysis of Martian rocks and planetary surface features. On May 1, 2009, Spirit got stuck in soft soil. The rover continued in a stationary role until communication failed on March 22, 2010.

في 4 يناير 2004 هبطت بنجاح على سطح المريخ مركبة روبوتية اسمها سبيريت (أو مير-أ وهي اختصار لمركبة اكتشاف المريخ-أ)، وذلك بعد سبعة أشهر من السفر في الفضاء. إذ غادرت سبيريت الأرض في 10 يونيو 2003. عملت المركبة على سطح المريخ بشكل فعال لأكثر من 5 سنوات، تنقلت خلالها مسافة 7.73 كلم على سطح المريخ، مما سمح بالتحليل الجيولوجي للصخور المريخية وميزات سطح الكوكب. وفي 1 مايو 2009 علقت المركبة في تربة رخوة. ومع ذلك واصلت عملها من مكان ثابت حتى توقف الاتصالات بها في 22 مارس 2010.
