The 6^th of May 2012 was one of those special dates that sky gazers have been anticipating for a long time. A rare lunar phenomenon happened that evening, the moon was larger and brighter.

كان 6 مايو (أيار) 2012 واحداً من تلك التواريخ الخاصة التي ينتظرها مراقبو السماء. فقد حدثت ظاهرة نادرة للقمر في ذاك المساء حيث كان أكبر حجما وأكثر إشراقا.

As the moon's orbit around the earth is elliptical the farthest point is 409,000 km away from earth and the closest is 354,000 km away which means that the moon is closer to us by 55,000 km. And that is what happened on 6^th May, so the moon became larger and brighter - astrological refer to it as a lunar perigee. Tidal forces increase by about fifteen percent but water does not rise more than an inch only.

فمن المعروف أن مدار القمر حول الأرض هو بيضاوي الشكل، أبعد نقطة فيه 409,000 كلم عن الأرض، والأقرب هي 354,000 كلم وهذا يعني أن القمر يكون أقرب إلينا بحوالي 55,000 كيلومتر. وهذا ما حصل في 6 مايو (أيار) لذلك أصبح القمر أكبر حجما وأكثر إشراقا – ويطلق الفلكييون على ذلك إسم الحضيض القمري. وتزيد فيه قوى المد البحري بنحو 15 في المئة ومع ذلك لايرتفع منسوب الماء أكثر من إنش واحد فقط.
