Passion for chocolate is rooted in Mesoamerican history. It was a highly-prized luxury item among Mayan and Aztec upper class elites, who were known to savor a drink that combined roasted cacao beans with cornmeal, vanilla, honey and chilies. Cacao beans were as valuable a commodity as gold, and were even used to pay taxes levied by Aztec rulers.

شغف الشوكولاته متجذر في تاريخ أمريكا الوسطى. إذ أنها كانت من أهم ركائز الفخامة وتحظى بتقدير كبير في أوساط نخب الطبقة العليا لشعوب المايا والأزتك، الذين كانوا معروفين بتذوقهم لشراب يصنع من حبوب الكاكاو المحمصة مع دقيق الذرة والفانيليا والعسل والفلفل الحار. وكانت تعتبر حبوب الكاكاو سلعة قيمة مثل الذهب، وحتى أنها كانت تستخدم لدفع الضرائب المفروضة من قبل حكام عهد الازتيك.

By the early 1600s, the vogue for chocolate drinks had swept across Europe. In London, chocolate houses began to rival coffee houses as social gathering spots. Rather than drinking chocolate, British company Fry & Son made, in 1847, the first bar of chocolate. In 1861, Richard Cadbury created the first ever heart-shaped box filled with chocolate for Valentine’s Day. Thus, chocolate mated with Valentine’s Day. The commercialization of Valentine's Day flourished in America at the turn of the 20th century. In 1907, Hershey launched production of tear-dropped shaped "kisses".

وفي بدايات 1600 راجت مشروبات الشوكولاته واجتاحت أوروبا. فبدأت في لندن مشارب الشوكولاته تنافس المقاهي كأماكن تجمع اجتماعي. بدلا من استخدام الشوكولاته كمشروب، انتجت شركة فراي وأولاده البريطانية أول لوح شوكولاته في عام 1847. وفي عام 1861 قام ريتشارد كادبوري بصنع أول علبة على شكل قلب مملوءة بالشوكولاته لعيد الحب. وهكذا اقترنت الشوكولاته بعيد الحب (الفالنتين). وفي مطلع القرن العشرين ازدهر التسويق في عيد الحب في أمريكا. في عام 1907 أطلقت شركة هيرشي منتجا على شكل الدمعة أسموه "القبلات".
