Less than an hour away from the capital city of Senegal there is a 3 sq km unusual lake of vivid pink color. It is Lake Retba (or Lac Rose as it is known by locals) which is separated only by some narrow dunes from the Atlantic Ocean. The salinity of the lake compares to that of the Dead Sea and during the dry season it exceeds it. | على مسافة أقل من ساعة عن عاصمة السنغال هناك بحيرة غير عادية مساحتها ثلاث كيلومترات مربعة لونها وردي زاهي. إنها بحيرة ريتبا (أو لاك روز كما يسميها السكان المحليين) ولايفصلها عن المحيط الأطلسي سوى بعض الكثبان الرملية الضيقة. ترتفع ملوحة البحيرة خلال موسم الجفاف إلى مستويات ملوحة البحر الميت وقد تتجاوزها. |
The strawberry pink color is caused by the Dunaliella salina bacteria, which is attracted by the lake's salt content. The bacteria produces a red pigment in order to absorb the sunlight, thus giving the lake its unique color which is more visible during the dry season (which lasts from November to June) and less visible during the rainy season (July-October). Local residents mine the Lake for its salt, which they use mainly to preserve fish. In order to protect their skin from the extreme salinity of the water, workers rub their skin with shea butter. | وأما سبب اللون الوردي كالفراولة فهو بكتيريا سالينا دوناليلا التي تنجذب إلى المحتوي المالح للبحيرة. إذ تنتج هذه البكتيريا صبغة حمراء من أجل امتصاص أشعة الشمس، وبالتالي تعطي البحيرة لوناً فريداً من نوعه يكون أكثر وضوحا خلال موسم الجفاف (الذي يستمر من نوفمبر حتى يونيو) وأقل وضوحا خلال موسم الأمطار (من يوليو إلى أكتوبر). يستخرج السكان المحليين ملح البحيرة، ويستخدمونه بشكل أساسي لحفظ الأسماك. يوقوم العمال بدهن بشرتهم بشرتهم بزبدة الشيا من أجل حمايتها من الملوحة الشديدة للمياه. |
