Greenland is the world's largest non-continental island, in the far northeast of North America, largely within the Arctic Circle. The Greenland ice sheet is the second largest in the world. At its center, the ice can be up to 3 km thick, representing 10 percent of the world's total fresh water reserves. With the exception of a few sheltered valleys in South Greenland, the climate is arctic and the average temperature during the warmest month of the year does not exceed 10°C.

غرينلاند هي أكبر جزيرة في العالم ليست جزءاً من قارة، تقع في أقصى الشمال الشرقي لأميركا الشمالية وهي إلى حد كبير داخل الدائرة القطبية الشمالية. غطاؤها الجليدي هو ثاني أكبر غطاء جليدي في العالم. ففي وسط الجزيرة قد يصل سمك الجليد إلى 3 كم، وهو ما يمثل 10 في المئة من إجمالي احتياطيات العالم من المياه العذبة. باستثناء بعض الوديان المحمية في جنوب غرينلاند، فإن مناخها قطبي ولا يتجاوز متوسط درجة الحرارة خلال أحر أشهر السنة 10 درجة مئوية.
