For those who do not know Shisha, it is an instrument (often glass-based) for smoking in which the smoke is cooled by water. Shisha, from the Persian word shīshe, meaning glass, is the common term for the hookah in many Arab countries. Nargile (sometimes pronounced Argileh or Argilee) is the name most commonly used other countries. Nargileh ia deriven from the Sanskrit word nārikela which means coconuts, suggesting that early hookahs were made from coconut shells. According to Cyril Elgood it was the Indian physician Hakim Abu'l-Fatḥ Gīlānī, at the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar I (1542 - 1605 AD) who invented the idea.

لمن لا يعرفون الشيشة، هي أداة للتدخين (أساسها من الزجاج) حيث يتم تبريد الدخان بالماء. الشيشة كلمة أصلها فارسي و تعني الزجاج وهو مصطلح شائع للشيشة في العديد من الدول العربية. وتسمى أحياناً النارجيلة (أو الأرجيلة) واسم النارجيلة مستمد من الكلمة السنسكريتية وتعني جوز الهند مما يوحي بأن بدايات الشيشة كانت من قشور جوز الهند. فوفقا لسيريل إلغود كان الطبيب الهندي الحكيم أبو الفتح جيلاني من بلاط الامبراطور المغولي أكبر (1542 -- 1605 م) هو الذي ابتكر الفكرة.
