It is a polished and top-cut nut of a rare type of palm trees known for their male and female parts that resemble human genitals. The nut is called "Coco de Mer" or coconut of the sea and also referred to as the sea coconut, love nut, double coconut, seabean, coco fesse, or Seychelles nut. The origin of the tree is traced to Seychelles islands.

إنها جوزة مصقولة ومقطوعة الرأس لنوع نادر من شجر جوز الهند معروف بأعضائه الذكرية والأنثوية التي تحمل شبها قوياً بالأعضاء الجنسية للبشر. ويسمى هذا الجوز "كوكو دي مير" أو جوز الهند البحري ويشار إليه أيضا باسم جوز الهند البحري وجوز الحب وجوز الهند المزدوج وبذور البحر وكوكو فيس أو جوز سيشيل. لأن مصدر الشجرة يرجع إلى جزر السيشيل.

The name Coco de Mer came from old sailors who believed that it grows on underwater trees, in a forest at the bottom of the Indian Ocean. This believe came from sighting raising nuts from under the sea. When the fruit of a coco de mer falls into the sea, it sinks to the bottom. After a considerable period, the husk weakens and drops off and the internal parts of the nut decay which makes the nut buoyant and rise up to the surface and hence came the believe. Some other drunken sailors looking at sea thought they are the butts of rising mermaids. General Gordon believed in 1881 that it is the forbidden fruit that expelled Adam and Eve from Eden.

وقد جاء اسم كوكو دي مير من أن البحارة قديما كانوا يعتقدون بأنها تنمو على أشجار تحت الماء، في غابة في أسفل المحيط الهندي. وهذا الاعتقاد جاء بسبب رؤيتهم صعود الجوز من تحت سطح البحر. فعندما تسقط ثمار كوكو دي مير في البحر تغرق إلى القاع. وبعد فترة طويلة يضعف قشرها وينفك عنها وتتعفن أجزاء الجوزة الداخلية مما يجعل الجوزة تطفو وترتفع إلى سطح الماء، ومن هنا جاء ذاك الاعتقاد. أما بعض البحارة السكارى المخمورين كانوا عندما ينظرون إلى البحر ويرون هذه الثمار تطفو يعتقدون بأنها مؤخرات حوريات بحر يسبحن. ولكن الجنرال جوردن وصل إلى قناعة في عام 1881 بأنها هي الثمرة المحظورة التي أخرجت آدم وحواء من الجنة.

Unlike the coconut palm, the coco de mer palm has separate male and female trees. The butt-shaped nut come from the female tree while the male flowers develop into very suggestive phallic-looking catkins. The resemblance to human reproductive organs gave rise to a new folklore that on dark stormy nights, when no one is looking, the trees uproot themselves and lock in passionate carnal embrace. The legend goes that whoever sees the trees making love either die or go blind.

The mature fruit is 40–50 cm in diameter and weighs 15–42 kg, and contains the largest seed in the plant kingdom. The fruit, requires 6–7 years to mature and a further two years to germinate. The coco de mer were believed to hold great healing powers.

وخلافا لنخيل جوز الهند فإن نخيل كوكو دي مير له أشجار منفصلة من الذكور ومن الإناث. فالجوز الذي يشبه المؤخرة يأتي من الشجرة الأنثى في حين أن الزهور الذكرية المكتملة توحي كثيراً بشكل العضو الذكري. وقد أدى هذا التشابه مع الأعضاء التناسلية البشرية إلى ظهور اسطورة شعبية بأنه في الليالي العاصفة الداكنة، وعندما لا يكون هناك أحد ينظر، ترتفع الأشجار من جذورها وتقوم باحتضان بعضها وتمارس الجماع. وتقول الأسطورة بأن كل من يرى الأشجار في وضع الجماع إما أن يموت أو يعمى.

يصل قطر الفاكهة الناضجة إلى40-50 سم وتزن ما بين 15-42 كجم، وهي أكبر البذور في المملكة النباتية. وتحتاج الفاكهة حوالي 6-7 سنوات حتى تنضج وأكثر من عامين لتنبت. وكان يعتقد بأن لثمار الكوكو دي مير قوى شفائية فائقة.
