Amazing Glowing Caves Illuminated by Wormsكهوف متوهجة مذهلة تضيؤها الديدان

This is not a photo of the skydome in a dark night. It is the ceiling of one Waitomo cave!

هذه ليست صورة لقبة السماء في ليلة مظلمة، إنما هي صورة سقف أحد كهوف ويتومو!

I was about to publish this article, when my brother mentioned to me that he saw this amazing phenomena of glowing worms hanging on the canyon walls during a trip that he made with friends to Lake Karapiro on Waikato river close to Hamilton, New Zealand. it is believed that females glow to attract a male for mating, while both glow to attract prey like midges into sticky snare lines for the larva to feed on.

كنت على وشك نشر هذه المقالة حينما ذكر لي أخي أنه رأى ظاهرة الديدان المضيئة المذهلة هذه وهي معلقة على جدران أودية عندما كان في رحلة ليلية مع أصدقائه إلى بحيرة كارابيرو على نهر ايكاتو بالقرب من هاملتون بنيوزيلندا. ويعتقد أن الإناث توهج لجذب الذكور للتزاوج، بينما توهج كلاهما لجذب الفرائس مثل البرغش إلى كمين خطوط لزجة كي تتغذى الليرقات عليها.

A more famous place for glowworms is the Waitomo Glowworm Caves which are located just outside Waitomo town on the North Island of New Zealand. They are famous for the amazing twinkling glow coming from a sizable population of glowworms that live in the caves' ceilings. Glowworms are tiny, bio-luminescent creatures that produce a blue-green light and are found exclusively in New Zealand. Local Maori people knew of the Caves existence, but the subterranean caverns had never been extensively explored until 1887. Other places where bio-luminescent animals can be observed are Toyama Bay in Japan and Gippsland Lakes in Australia.

ولكن هناك مكان أكثر شهرة وهو كهوف ويتومو جلوورم الذي يقع خارج بلدة ويتومو على الجزيرة الشمالية لنيوزيلندا. وهي مشهورة بالتوهج المضيء المذهل الصادر عن سقفها والذي يأتي من عدد كبير من الديدان المضيئة التي تعيش في الكهوف. والديدان المضيئة هي مخلوقات صغيرة تعطي إضاءة بيولوجية بلون أزرق مخضر وتوجد فقط في نيوزيلندا وقد عرفت شعوب الماوري المحلية بوجود هذه الكهوف، ولكن هذه الكهوف لم تكتشف بدقة وبتفصيل حتى عام 1887. وهناك أماكن أخرى في العالم توجد فيها مخلوقات مضيئة مثل خليج توياما في اليابان وبحيرات جيبسلاند في أستراليا.
