The Japanese macaque (Japanese Nihonzaru - Nihon = Japan + zaru =monkey), also known as the snow monkey, lives in matrilineal societies near snowy areas. They are very intelligent. Researchers at Koshima Island in Japan left potatoes out on the beach, then witnessed one female washing the food off with river water rather than brushing it off, and later even dipping it into salty sea water to get salty potatoes. The macaque bathe together in hot springs and roll snowballs for play and fun. Macaques mostly move on all fours, can leap and are great swimmers.

المكاك الياباني (باليابانية نيهون زارو: نيهون = اليابان + زارو = قرد) ويعرف أيضا بقرد الثلج، يعيش في جماعات قرب المناطق الثلجية. وهو ذكي جدا، فمثلاً ترك باحثون بطاطا على الشاطئ في جزيرة كوشيما في اليابان وراقبوا إحدى إناث المكاك تأخذ البطاطا وتغسلها بمياه النهر بدلا من تنظيفها بالمسح، و بعد ذلك قامت بغمسها في ماء البحر المالح للحصول على نكهة البطاطا المملحة. والمكاك يستحمون معا في الينابيع الساخنة ويصنعون كرات الثلج للعب والمتعة. وهم يتنقلون في الغالب على أربع ويستطيعون القفز الطويل والسباحة بمهارة.

Adults weigh on average between 8-12 kg and 50-60 cm tall. They have pinkish faces and posteriors and are covered in brown, grayish, or yellowish fur. Their coats are well-adapted to the cold and its thickness increases as temperature decreases; can cope with temperatures as low as -20°C. The longevity for the macaque averages 6.3 years, but could live up to 30 years. Their diet includes both plant and animal material.

ويزن الفرد البالغ منها في المتوسط ما بين 8-12 كجم وطول قامته 50-60 سم. وجوههم ومؤخراتهم وردية اللون وتغطيهم فراء بنية أو رمادية أو ضاربة إلى الصفرة. وفراؤهم يتكيف جيدا مع البرودة إذ يزيد سمكه عند انخفاض درجة الحرارة مما يمكنهم من تحمل درجات حرارة منخفضة تصل إلى -20 درجة مئوية. معدل عمر المكاك 6.3 سنة ولكنه قد يعيش الى 30 عاما. وهم من آكلي النباتات واللحوم.
