Nowadays many upturned boat houses serve as unique holiday accommodations.

The small fishing village Equihen Plage is famous for its upturned boat houses. The village is located some 4.8 km south of Boulogne, northern France, on the English Channel coast with a population of about 3,000. In the old days, old boats unworthy for the sea were dragged up to high grounds and turned upside down. The hull becomes a roof, then covered in tar to ensure no water leaks. A door is cut out on the side, and windows to let in air and light. The entire length of the boat served as a single room for cooking and sleeping.

تشتهر قرية الصيد الصغيرة إكيهين بلاج ببيوت القوارب المقلوبة. وتقع القرية على بعد 4.8 كم جنوب بولون، شمال فرنسا، على ساحل القناة الإنجليزية ويبلغ عدد سكانها حوالي 3000 نسمة. في الأيام الخوالي، كانت القوارب القديمة غير الصالحة للبحر تسحب إلى أرض مرتفعة وتقلب رأسا على عقب. فيصبح هيكل القارب سقفا وكان يغطى بالقطران للتأكد من عدم تسريب الماء. ثم يقطع مكان للباب على الجانب وكذلك نوافذ كي تسمح بالهواء والضوء. ويصبح طول القارب بمثابة غرفة واحدة للطهي والنوم.

During the Second World War, nearly all the boathouses got destroyed, but their legacy lingered on. In the 1990s, about sixty years after their disappearance, the village decided to revive the ancient heritage and erected a group of upturned boat houses and fitted them with modern facilities to entice tourists.

خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية، دمرت جميع بيوت القوارب تقريبا، ولكن إرثها بقي في الأذهان. في التسعينات، أي بعد حوالي 60 عاما من اختفائها، قررت القرية إحياء التراث القديم، فأقامت مجموعة من بيوت القوارب المقلوبة وزودتها بمرافق حديثة لإغراء السياح.
