The secrets of why central-American jewel scarab beetles look like they are made from pure gold, has been uncovered by physicists at the University of Exeter. Their results are published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface. Experiments showed that the golden beetles and its armor uniquely manipulates the way the light is reflected. Scientist refer to it as 'optically-ambidextrous', meaning that it reflects both left-handed and right-handed circularly-polarized light, so that it looks like pure gold.

وقد كشف علماء الفيزياء في جامعة إكستر عن سر سبب اللون الذهبي لخنافس الجعران الموجودة في أمريكا الوسطى وكأنها مصنوعة من الذهب الخالص. وتم نشر نتائج أبحاثهم في مجلة واجهة الجمعية الملكية. فقد أظهرت التجارب أن الخنافس الذهبية ودروعها قادرة على التتلاعب بشكل فريد بالطريقة التي ينعكس فيها الضوء. فيشير العلماء إليها على أنها "ثنائية الإنعكاس البصري'' أي أشبه بمن يستطيع غستخدام كلتا يديه اليمين واليسار بنفس المهنية، مما يعني أنها تعكس الضوء المستقطب دائريًا اليمينى واليسارى معاً، بحيث تبدو كأنها من الذهب الخالص.
