Subterranean lakes are lakes under the surface of the Earth's crust. They are associated with caves, aquifers, or springs of low salinity water. The largest non-subglacial underground lake in the world is Dragon's Breath Cave, Namibia, with an area of almost 20,000 m2. While the largest subglacial lake is Lake Vostok in Antarctica measuring 250 km long by 50 km wide, believed to be sealed under an ice cap 15 million years ago.

German engineering ingenuity came up with a solution. In 2003, they inagurated a unique water bridge –a water bridge over Elbe river– that connects Berlin's inland harbor with Rhine river ports. The bridge total length is 918 meters, 690 meters are over land and 228 meters are over water.
